Concept Formation in Scientific Knowledge Discovery from a Constructivist View
نویسندگان
چکیده
This chapter argues that the computer-aided scientific knowledge discovery tool should facilitate scientific knowledge development through assisting scientists to build first-person knowledge and thirdperson knowledge. The chapter reviews cognitive theories of human knowledge construction and presents a hydrological modelling scenario as an exemplar of these concepts. A number of challenges for designing such a system have been discussed.

Knowledge = Concepts: A Harmful Equation
Research on knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) has been impeded by a limited vision of knowledge, inherited from machine learning (ML) and other branches of computer science. In contrast with KDD and ML, research on automation of scientific discovery (SD) took from natural sciences a broader perspective on knowledge. We analyze the typical ML view of discovery as supervised and unsupervised...

This paper starts with a survey of different notions of learning, and finds that the “logic” of discovery has been neglected. The paradox of “exploitation” and “ exploration”, derived from the organization literature, is proposed as the core issue. We need to recognize the importance of organization and co-ordination, in learning and innovation. This implies, among other things, that transactio...

متن کاملHybridity of Scientific Discourses: an Intertextual Perspective and Implications for ESP Pedagogy
In light of a large number of admirable attempts which look at scientific discourse from social, dialogic and interpersonal points of view, the propositions which consider scientific discourse as an interactive endeavor are now well-established. By the force of our social constructivist gyrations, we have developed glimpses of a social, cultural and historical dimension in which the discourse o...

Nonaka and Takeuchi’s highly influential account of tacit–explicit knowledgeconversion in Japan’s knowledge-creating companies has been instrumental in Knowledge Management’s institutionalisation of Michael Polanyi’s distinction between ‘tacit knowledge’ and ‘explicit knowledge’. But tacit knowledge has been misunderstood and what Nonaka and Takeuchi claim in the name of explicit knowledge does...
